Which Thai coast for your week in the sun: sorted by month, kids and airport reach

Thailand's two beach coasts take their rain in different months, so the right one for your week depends on when you fly, who is with you and which airport you land at.

Thailand has two beach coasts, and they do not share a calendar. The Andaman coast on the west — Phuket, Krabi, Railay and Koh Lanta — is at its best from roughly November through April. The Gulf coast on the east — Koh Samui, with Koh Phangan and Koh Tao beside it — runs on a different cycle and is wettest from about October to December, which is exactly why it is the coast that works in the middle of the year. Pick the month first, then the party, then the airport. That order settles the question for almost every week in the sun.

Which Thai coast is dry in which month

Thailand's Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is the reliable choice from November through April and takes the southwest monsoon from roughly June, peaking around September and October. Thailand's Gulf coast (Koh Samui) is the better bet from about June through September, then gets its own heaviest rain from roughly October to December. January to April is the window when both coasts are usually good at once.

January–FebruaryEitherThailand's cool, dry peak nationally. Both coasts are usually good; prices and crowds are at their highest.
March–AprilEitherThe hot season. Both coasts generally dry; Songkran in mid-April fills the beach towns with water fights.

What "rainy" means on a Thai beach

A wet month on either coast rarely means a week of solid rain. More often it means heavy afternoon downpours, rougher water and red flags on the beaches, and boat trips that run less often or get cancelled. That last point matters more than the showers: the Andaman's signature days — the Phi Phi Islands, Phang Nga Bay, the Hong Islands — are all boat days, and a monsoon sea is what takes them off the table. On a calm-sea day, when to land at Maya Bay decides whether you catch it at its quietest or at its busiest.

Why the national "best months" can mislead you

Most "when to go to Thailand" advice is written for the whole country, and the whole country's dry season is the Andaman's dry season. If your dates fall between June and September, that advice points you at the wrong coast. The Gulf is the exception the general rule leaves out.

Which Thai coast suits a family with kids

For families, Phuket on the Andaman coast is the easiest Thai beach base in season: the island is road-connected to the mainland, so there is no boat transfer after a long-haul flight, and Kata and Karon pair good beaches with a calmer scene than Patong. On the Gulf coast, Koh Samui's Lamai and Choeng Mon do the same job in the months the Andaman is wet.

Andaman options for families

In Phuket, Kata and Karon are the family default — the same Andaman water as Patong without the Bangla Road nightlife, with plenty of restaurants in walking distance. Near Krabi, Koh Lanta is the quieter island base that suits families who want space over choice. Our guide to where to stay in Phuket breaks the island down beach by beach, and you can compare family hotels in Kata once the area is settled.

Railay is beautiful, and it is boat-only

Railay, the cliff-ringed peninsula near Krabi, has no road in: every arrival and every departure is a longtail transfer from Ao Nang or Krabi town, bags included. That is the magic for couples and climbers, and it is real work with small children and luggage. The Railay guide covers how the boats run; for a family it is usually better as a day trip than a base.

Gulf options for families

On Koh Samui, Lamai is more relaxed and family-friendly than Chaweng, and Choeng Mon is quiet. Chaweng is the liveliest beach on the island and suits families with older kids who want restaurants and water sports close by.

Which Thai coast is easiest to reach from the US

From the US, Phuket is the easiest Thai beach to reach: Phuket International (HKT) takes direct flights from Bangkok and some international routes, so a one-stop itinerary can sometimes skip Bangkok altogether. Krabi (KBV) is close behind. Koh Samui (USM) is a Bangkok Airways hub with fares that run higher, and the cheaper alternative adds a ferry from Surat Thani on the mainland.

The Andaman airports

Most flights from the US reach Thailand with one stop via East Asia or the Middle East, and land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) in Bangkok. From there, Phuket and Krabi are a short domestic flight away on several carriers, including the low-cost airlines out of Don Mueang (DMK). Phuket also has the widest range of hotels at every price point, which is part of why it is the safe pick when logistics matter.

The Samui premium

Koh Samui is the beach where airport reach costs real money. Bangkok Airways runs the island's privately owned airport, so flying straight in is the quickest and most comfortable route and typically the most expensive. Flying to Surat Thani and taking the ferry is noticeably cheaper and adds hours to the day. Combined flight-and-boat tickets bundle the whole journey. The Koh Samui guide walks through both routes.

Can you do both Thai coasts in one trip

Thailand's Andaman and Gulf coasts can both go into one trip, but rarely into one week. The two coasts sit on opposite sides of the peninsula with no quick crossing, so linking Phuket or Krabi with Koh Samui usually means a flight back through Bangkok or a long overland-and-ferry day. In a single week, choose one coast and one base.

With two weeks, splitting the coasts becomes reasonable, and it makes the most sense from January to April, when both are usually dry at once. A two-week trip sits comfortably inside the visa-exempt stay of 30 days for US passport holders, so the constraint is the calendar and the transfers, not the paperwork.

The decision underneath the coast

The coast question has a clean answer: the month picks the side, the family picks the beach, and the airport decides whether the beach is easy or expensive to reach. Every row of the table above can be read on its own, and for a week of sun that is enough.

Notice what the answer does to the rest of the trip, though. Once you have picked a coast, you have also picked the airport you fly into, whether Bangkok is a night at the start or a stop in the middle, and whether a week in Chiang Mai or the north fits before the beach or after it. A coast chosen for November weather can quietly lock in a routing that costs a day in transit at each end. These choices get made one at a time and only show their cost together. How the base, the route and the order fit into a single plan is worked through in the complete Thailand trip guide.

FAQ

Is Phuket or Koh Samui better in July?

Koh Samui, usually. July falls in the Andaman monsoon, when Phuket's seas are rougher and boat trips are less reliable, while the Gulf coast is in its favorable stretch.

Which Thai coast is better at Christmas?

The Andaman coast. December is the start of Phuket and Krabi's peak season, and it falls inside the Gulf coast's wettest stretch. Book early: it is also the most expensive time of year.

Is Krabi on an island?

No. Krabi town, Ao Nang and Railay are on the mainland; Railay simply feels like an island because cliffs cut it off from the roads. Koh Lanta, Phi Phi and the Hong Islands are the islands nearby.

What is the worst month for a Thai beach trip?

October is the hardest month to call. The Andaman monsoon is at its peak and the Gulf's heaviest rain is beginning, so neither coast is reliably dry.
